Just the Beginning

Actually I did not like to blog anything on April Fools’ Day LoL. Specifically, this post is about my small achievements. Well, the small achievements were just the starting point of my career. I always realize that the achievements are not that big. Some people may not be confident to publicly show the small number of papers, especially the papers are not that well contributed works. For me (specifically me),  I am still proud to ever produce them.

So what are they? They are academic papers that I had contributed since I was a PhD student in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. I enrolled here on Jan 7th, 2008. In some papers, I was a co-author. Thanks a million for main authors and co-authors who contributed a lot on the papers. Thanks a million for pieces of advice. Thanks a million for their support, push, encouragement, and being patient with me.

Got paper acceptance in ECTI-CON 2012

In this month, I got two papers to be published in conference proceedings. The former one will be published in the conference proceedings of IEEE ISPA 2012 in Spain as I blogged on last week. The later one will be in the proceedings of ECTI-CON 2012. This ECTI-CON 2012 is a conference that will be held in Hua Hin, Thailand (venue: Courtyard by Marriott at Cha-am Beach) on May 16-18, 2012. Interestingly, the proceedings of ECTI-CON will be available in IEEE Xplore.

Got paper acceptance in 10th IEEE ISPA 2012

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I just got an email regarding a notification of paper acceptance. Well, our new paper “Adaptive Power Management for Data Center in Smart Grid Environment” has been accepted to be published in the proceedings of the conference The 10th IEEE International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing with Applications (ISPA-12).

The authors of the paper are [1] Rakpong Kaewpuang (the main contributor of this paper), [2] Sivadon Chaisiri (me) [3] Asst. Prof. Dusit Niyato, [4] Assoc. Prof. Bu-Sung Lee, and [5] Asst. Prof. Ping Wang. We are from School of Computer Engineering (SCE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. One of the authors will present the paper in this conference. This IEEE conference will be held in Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain between July 10-13, 2012.

ก่อนหน้านี้ ผมได้เล่าถึงเลขฟีโบนัชชีผ่านเรื่องราวการขยายเผ่าพันธุ์ของกระต่าย ครั้งนี้  ผมเกิดนึกสนุกอยากเล่าเรื่องตัวเลขค่านึงที่มีความโด่งดังและมีประวัติศาสตร์ยาวนานกว่า 4,000 ปี โดยนำท่านชมโปรแกรมท่องเที่ยว  ”พายเรือเป็นวงกลม ชมพีระมิด พิชิตปาเป้าที่คาสิโน” แฮๆ … จริงๆก็ไม่ได้เกี่ยวข้องกับการท่องเที่ยวแต่อย่างใด หากแต่ผมเพียงอยากเขียนรำลึกถึง พาย (π) ที่พวกเราเคยร่ำเรียนกันมาเมื่อครั้งยังเยาว์วัย

สมัยที่เรายังเรียนประถมและมัธยม (และแม้แต่ในอุดมศึกษา) เราได้เรียนเรื่องวงกลม เราได้รู้จักสูตรหาพื้นที่วงกลมคือ “พายอาร์กำลังสอง” และสูตรหาเส้นรอบวงคือ “สองพายอาร์” เรามารื้อฟื้นความหลังกันนิดนึงว่า “พาย” คืออะไร และมีความน่าสนใจอย่างไรบ้าง?

เผ่าพันธุ์กระต่ายกับ Fibonacci number

มีคนขอให้ผมอธิบายเรื่องเลขฟีโบนัชชี (Fibonacci number) เลยทำให้ผมนึกถึงเรื่องราวน่าสนใจสมัยผมยังเรียนปริญญาตรี

สมัยผมเรียนวิทยาศาสตร์คอมพิวเตอร์ที่ธรรมศาสตร์ ผมได้เรียนเรื่องเลขฟีโบนัชชี ในชั่วโมงเรียนผมไม่ค่อยได้สนใจอะไรมากหรอกนะว่าเลขดังกล่าวน่าสนใจอย่างไร จนกระทั่งผมได้ยินอาจารย์บอกว่า เลขนี้อธิบายด้วยเรื่องราวการขยายเผ่าพันธุ์ของกระต่าย!

Charity Engine มาร่วมกันอุทิศพลังประมวลผลเพื่อการกุศลกันเถอะ

“Changing the world one bit at a time” เป็นวลีที่จับใจจริงๆ

Charity Engine เป็นซอฟต์แวร์ฝั่งไคลเอนต์ (client) ที่รับงาน (job) จากเซิร์ฟเวอร์ส่วนกลาง โดย job ดังกล่าวเกิดจาก “ปัญหา” ขนาดใหญ่ โดยปกติแล้ว ปัญหาเหล่านี้เป็นปัญหาทางวิทยาศาสตร์หรืองานวิจัยที่มีความซับซ้อนสูงมากๆ และต้องยุ่งเกี่ยวกับข้อมูลขนาดมหึมา ทำให้โปรแกรมเมอร์ต้องทำการ parallelize หรือเขียนโปรแกรมเพื่อแก้ปัญหาให้สามารถประมวลผลแบบขนานได้  ส่งผลให้ปัญหาถูกแก้ได้รวดเร็วขึ้น โดยโปรแกรมเมอร์ใช้วิธีบางอย่างในการแบ่งโปรเซสของปัญหาให้เป็นหน่วยย่อยๆ และข้อมูลขนาดมหึมาของปัญหายังสามารถถูกแบ่งเป็นข้อมูลย่อยๆได้อีกด้วย (ซึ่งแบ่งข้อมูลใหญ่ๆให้เล็กลงทำได้ง่ายกว่าแบ่งโปรเซส)

เมื่อวันอังคารที่ 10 ม.ค. ที่ผ่านมา ผมเข้าไปฟังบรรยายหัวข้อ Cross-Media Analysis for Abstractions of Social Activities บรรยายโดย Dr. Sayaka Akioka จากมหาวิทยาลัยวาเซดะ (WASEDA University) ประเทศญี่ปุ่น

เกริ่นนิดนึงว่า งานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับการประมวลผลและวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลที่เกี่ยวกับกิจกรรม/พฤติกรรมมนุษย์ในโลก online social media (เช่น Twitter, Facebook, และ Google+) กำลังร้อนแรงมาก มีงานวิจัยทั้งที่ออกในแนวคิดค้น algorithm และ framework สำหรับการวิเคราะห์และประมวลผลข้อมูล และงานวิจัยที่ออกไปทางสังคมศาสตร์ที่สนผลลัพธ์จากการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล

ปีใหม่ พร้อมได้เริ่มตำแหน่งงานใหม่

ปีใหม่แล้วจนได้ ในที่สุด ทุนการศึกษาของผมก็หมดลงในวันศุกร์ที่ผ่านมา พอทุนหมด ผมก็เลยต้องหาทุนส่วนตัวไว้เลี้ยงชีพและจ่ายค่าเทอมจากการทำงาน ก่อนที่ทุนการศึกษาจะหมดนั้น ผมได้เตรียมหางานทำเพื่อเลี้ยงชีพตัวเองไว้แล้ว ซึ่งได้เตรียมตัวไว้ล่วงหน้าถึง 2 – 3 เดือนก่อน

ในที่สุด ผมก็เลือกทำงานที่ School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University ซึ่งเป็นที่ที่ผมเรียนอยู่นี่แหละ เพิ่งเริ่มงานในวันจันทร์ที่ผ่านมา ตำแหน่งงานคือ Research Associate (เรียกสั้นๆว่า RA) ส่วนเรื่องเรียน ผมก็ยังเป็นนิสิตปริญญาเอกอยู่นะ แต่ต้องเปลี่ยนสถานภาพจาก fulltime study เป็น par-time

ผมก็อยากฝากท่านที่ได้ทุนการศึกษา ไม่ว่าจะได้ทุนจากสถาบันไหนก็ตาม อยากจะบอกว่า ถ้าเรียนให้จบก่อนที่ทุนจะหมดก็ถือว่าเป็นเรื่องดี และเพื่อความไม่ประมาท ในระหว่างเรียน อย่าใช้เงินฟุ้มเฟือยจากการเที่ยวเตร่และซื้อของที่ไม่จำเป็น ไม่ว่าจะปาร์ตี้ทุกศุกร์เสาร์ ซื้อโทรศัพท์มือถือ เครื่องเกมส์ รถยนต์ (มีคนได้ทุนจนซื้อรถได้ด้วยนะเออ) ก็งดๆซะ พยามยามอดออมเงินจากทุนให้ได้เยอะๆ เรื่องกิน ก็กินไปเถอะ แต่ถ้าเป็นไปได้ ก็กินแต่พออิ่ม กินสนองกิเลสพอเป็นพิธีแต่อย่าบ่อยไป

ปีใหม่ งานใหม่ และที่แน่นอนคือ จะมีวันใหม่เกิดขึ้นตลอดทั้งปี

มาติดเกาะถึง 4 ปีทำไม?

ตำแหน่งบนแผนที่ของประเทศสิงคโปร์ พยายามเพ่งให้มากๆ เห็นไหมครับ เป็นจุดเล็กๆหนึ่งจุด เอ่อ .. จริงๆผมมองไม่เห็นหรอก (ที่มา - ภาพจากวิกิพีเดีย)

ก็จะสิ้นปีแล้ว บวกกับผ่านวันครบรอบที่ผมก็ใช้ชีวิตบนเกาะเล็กๆแห่งหนึ่งมาเป็นเวลา 4 ปี โดยเกาะแห่งนี้ก็คือ ประเทศสิงคโปร์ ขออัพเดทบลอกกันหน่อยแล้วกัน

ผมเคยมาสิงคโปร์ครั้งแรกในปี ค.ศ. 2005 ตอนนั้นผมมาทำงาน (สมัยยังทำงานอยู่ Sun Microsystems) และหลังจากนั้นก็มาทำงานและก็มาเที่ยวที่สิงคโปร์เป็นช่วงๆ ในช่วงที่มาทำงานที่สิงคโปร์สมัยนั้น ผมรู้สึกประทับใจกับบรรยากาศในประเทศนี้ โดยรวมคือ สิงคโปร์เป็นเมืองสะอาด ปลอดภัย การจราจรสะดวกรวดเร็ว  อินเทอร์เนตเร็ว มีต้นไม้มีสวนสาธารณะให้เห็นแทบทุกหนแห่ง  การดำเนินงานของราชการ/เอกชนที่รวดเร็วทันใจ … โดยสรุปแล้วกัน คือ ถ้ามีโอกาสก็อยากมาทำงานที่นี่

จนกระทั่งปี ค.ศ. 2007 สมัยนั้นผมกลับไปใช้ชีวิตที่บ้านเกิด คือ จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี และผมก็ทำงานเป็นอาจารย์ที่ ม.อุบล ตอนนั้นมีอาจารย์หลายท่าน ซึ่งเป็นเพื่อนเป็นพี่ร่วมงานกับผมแนะนำเรื่องศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาเอก ศึกษาต่อทำไมเหรอ? ก็เพื่อความก้าวหน้าในอาชีพการงานของสายวิชาการนั่นเอง และแล้ว ผมก็เตรียมตัวหาทุนและที่เรียนต่อ

ท้ายที่สุด ผมก็ได้ทุนเรียนเอกที่ School of Computer Engineering ของ Nanyang Technological University ประเทศสิงคโปร์ ซึ่งทุนนี้เป็นทุนได้เปล่า(ไม่ต้องใช้ทุน) ให้ค่าตอบแทนดีพอควร คือ มีเงินเดือนให้ ทุนจ่ายค่าเทอมให้พร้อม และทุนมีอายุ 4 ปี ที่สำคัญคือ เรียนที่สิงคโปร์ ซึ่งเป็นประเทศที่ผมชอบอยู่แล้ว และไม่ไกลประเทศไทย ถ้าอยากจะกลับไทยเมื่อไหร่ ก็ทำได้ไม่ยากนัก สรุปคือ ผมรับทุนและก็มาเรียนที่สิงคโปร์ โดยวันที่ผมเดินทางมาสิงคโปร์ เพื่อมาทำปริญญาเอกคือ วันที่ 24 ธันวาคม ค.ศ. 2007 จากวันนั้นล่วงมาจนถึงวันนี้ ผมก็ร่ำเรียนบนเกาะเล็กๆแห่งนี้มาเป็นเวลาถึง 4 ปี

ผ่านไป 4 ปีแล้ว และผมก็คงได้อยู่สิงคโปร์อีกอย่างน้อย 6 เดือนเพื่อสะสางเรื่องเรียนที่ยังค้างคา นั่นคือ ผมต้องเขียนวิทยานิพนธ์ให้แล้วเสร็จ เพราะทุนของผมหมดแล้วในวันที่ 6 มกราคม ค.ศ. 2012 นี้แล้ว โชคดีที่ว่า ผมได้งานทำเป็นนักวิจัยให้กับโครงการวิจัยหนึ่งของมหาลัยที่ผมเรียน เริ่มงานแล้วในเดือนหน้า ทำให้ผมคลายกังวลเรื่องค่าใช้จ่ายหลังจากทุนโดนตัด

หากว่าไม่ขี้เกียจในช่วงเวลาว่าง(ซึ่งมีน้อยลง) ผมคงจะได้เล่าว่า ชีวิตที่สิงคโปร์ที่ผ่านๆมาเป็นไงบ้าง

ใช้บริการ Cloud Computing แล้วลดคาร์บอนได้ (จริงหรือ??)

เนื่องจากเมื่อวานนี้ ผมเขียนข่าวลง blognone หัวข้อ บริการกลุ่มเมฆช่วยลดคาร์บอนได้ 50% เป็นข่าวสั้นๆมากๆ แต่ถ้าจะให้ละเอียดแล้ว ก็คงเป็น special report กันเลย เพราะเนื้อหาจริงๆมันมีประโยชน์และยาวมากๆ เป็นข่าวที่สรุปย่อรายงานเรื่อง Cloud Computing – The IT Solution for the 21th Century  ของ Carbon Disclosure Project โดยสรุปแล้ว เนื้อหาก็พูดถึงว่า หากบริษัทต่างๆหันมาใช้บริการกลุ่มเมฆ (cloud computing) แล้ว จะช่วยลดการปล่อยคาร์บอนได้ถึง 50% เลยทีเดียว และยังสามารถลดต้นทุนพลังงานได้อย่างมหาศาล

บริษัทลดการปล่อยคาบอนไป 50% แต่ไปเพิ่มที่ผู้ให้บริการกลุ่มเมฆหรือเปล่าครับ? อยากรู้ว่าโดยรวมทั้งบริษัทและผู้ให้บริการ มันลดไปได้เยอะหรือเปล่า

Contact Official Apple Call Center for a Better Service

This entry was written as a letter of apology to Apple. But, first of all, I wanted to talk about the experience I encountered on last week. I told the story step-by-step (this is my own and old writing style hahaha).

Bought a Product

On Fri, 23rd September, I purchased a white iPad 2 (16GB WiFi/3G model) directly from Apple Online Store Thailand. Note that the cost of iPad 2 sold by Apple Online Store Thailand is slightly cheaper than that of Singapore (I stay in Singapore). iPad 2 was delivered by DHL to the destination on Wednesday 28th.

Problem

Well, everything looked smooth. Unfortunately, the home button of this iPad was not responsive. That is, we pressed the button but this iPad didn’t react anything. When we wanted to close any program on this iPad, we need to off iPad. This is not a normal condition, right? So it’s time to claim a new iPad from Apple.

Updated Lonely Blog (September 2011)

Now my blog is so quiet. Fortunately, many people (most from Thailand) have visited my blog. Most articles (about 99.50%) were written in Thai; indeed, the target readers are Thai. Someday, (maybe) when I’m much more free, I’ll create a new blog written in only English.

Well, let me update something about me a bit. What I met in the last few months:

• I presented my published paper at IEEE MASCOTS 2011 held in Raffles Hotel, Singapore. The paper abstract can be found here. The paper was selected as one of the three best paper candidates. The other two papers’re done by IBM. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the award. It’s ok, I’ve gotten many friends in this conference. This was the reason why I couldn’t update the blog in July.
• I went back Thailand to deal with something really matter. I met my dad, sisters, grandma, aunt, and friends. I had great trips and dinners with my old friends, i.e., Ball, Buhn, Ki, Oate, and Ake. Thanks my dad and sisters & friends for encouraging me to move forward. This was the reason why I couldn’t update the blog in August. Poor me! I spent so much money for the Thailand trip (over S$2,500) but it’s really worth.
• Damn! I didn’t have much progress of my research. I have to finish my PhD thesis, at least, its draft should be done in December 11/January 12. In Jan 2012, the PhD scholarship (that I have gotten for 4 years) will stop i.e., the monthly salary will stop as well. I just worry about the tuition fee (about S$6,000). I wish I will still have sufficient saving money to pay that fee and survive in Singapore for a month.  Again, I haven’t paid this fee until Dec 12 since I got the scholarship. Fortunately, I’ve gotten a short-term job between Jan and Dec 2012. This has been the reason why I cannot often update the blog, since I have to finish the thesis (and also one more journal paper).

p.s. I’ve just changed my hairstyle.  This is not the reason I couldn’t update the blog. A person (really important to me) recommended me to try this style.

I’m an all-one-5-bit guy

Originally, at time zero, I started from a register with binary value “0000000″. Then the least significant biti (LSB) was set to 1 after the first 365 days passed. It is just a 365-day journey around the sun. One round-trip of the journey increases 1 to the register. Until now, the first 5 digits starting from the LSB were set to 1, i.e., “0011111″. It is the truth for most regular people that we cannot fulfill 1 to this 7-bit register. The issue what I keep in mind is only the journey around the sun. Absolutely, I have encountered both happiness and unhappiness in this journey. However, I am ok with the results of journey. I cannot control many factors that impact the journey. Although I cannot predict the number of 365-day round trips I will have, I will do my best for today.
